Eating a healthy breakfast isn’t always easy. While cinnamon rolls, bagels, chocolate chip banana bread, croissants, and scones are super tasty, all of those carbs aren’t so great for the waistline and your blood sugar. One quick, easy way to get some protein in your body and fill you up in the morning is with a Greek yogurt bowl.
I love two things about this breakfast. One, you can make it in under 5 minutes. Two, it’s SUPER versatile.
The Building Blocks
These are my typical building blocks – but there are so many combinations – the possibilities are endless.
Greek yogurt. If you’re calorie conscious, stick to the serving size on the tub of yogurt. Typically it’s 1 cup. I like to use 2% Greek yogurt or 0%. The full-fat kind is too rich for me. But, this is your bowl – so do what you want!
Fruit. I love me some fresh fruit! My favorites are strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. You can use fresh or frozen – depends on what you have on hand. If you’re watching your sugar, bananas, mangos, and pineapple are higher in sugar. For a full list of fruits with the lowest to highest amounts of sugar, Very Well has a great article about it.
Nuts and Seeds. For an added crunch, I like to add nuts to my Greek yogurt bowl. Slivered almonds are my fave. But crushed up pistachios, pecans and hazelnuts work well too. Nuts are full of heart-healthy fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals, but are high in fat and calories. So if you use them, use them in small doses. You can also a variety of seeds, like pumpkin, sunflower, chia and flax seeds.
Granola. Another crunchy ingredient you can add is granola. There are so many different kinds on the market now, I’m sure you can find one that tickles your fancy.
Natural sweetener. Plain Greek yogurt is a bit too…meh….for me. I like to sweeten it up just a tad with honey or agave nectar. Mix it in with the yogurt first before you put on your toppings.
